The session is in progress, please post your questions only after reading the entire thread to assure your question has not already been asked and answered.
OK every one. It's time for all good little SRT engineers to go home and get some sleep so we can come back tomorrow and continue to bring you the outstanding products we've all been talking about. As always, thanks to all of you for joining us tonight and thanks for following the rules (mostly). We truly do love being out here on the forums with you. Not sure which forum we're on next month but look for the posting and we'll let you know as soon as we figure it out.

Sorry for breaking th erules and posting ahead of time but I won't be able to be on later tonight.
So as a fellow mechanical engineer and car guy, I think it is way cool for the SRT guys to be doing this, keep up the good work!
The new SRT-4 will be a 300hp FWD vehicle. Question is what was the reasoning behind not putting AWD in the vehicle? I know its not because you guys are afraid of the STi and EVO right! ;) I know you can't tell us about future plans, but was there at least discussion about AWD and its possibility in the Caliber SRT-4?
One last comment, I believe you guys need to make sure that the Caliber has the correct answer to the question: That thing got a Hemi?
Because if you guys don't then I might!
ooooh can anyone say Caliber SRT-8!

They already said they decided not to make it AWD to cut down cost, to keep it AFFORDABLE, and to keep the weight down.
And of course it doesn't have a damn hemi... it's got the new 'world engine'.
As far as the FUTURE "AWD version" of the caliber, you KNOW they're going to say "cannot answer questions regarding future projects".

But now if they can fit an ls2 into a pontiac solstice...

Why dont they say the I-4 has a hemi design also.
...
because it has a pent roof combustion chamber... not hemispherical.... it has 4 valves , not 2.... pretty much nothing in common.

My first question is why did Dodge drop the Neon SRT-4? Also how is the SRT-4 Caliber making 300hp stock, when the Neon SRT-4 only makes 230hp stock? The Caliber looks heavier than the Neon. Did you give the Caliber a bigger turbo or something? More forced air induction? Bigger fuel rail/injectors? Is the SRT-4 Caliber stock under the hood similar to the stage 3 Neon SRT-4?

Please hold off on posting your questions in this section until that time. Thanks.
Good evening to all. I see we have quite a few of you joining us already. We expect quite a turnout tonight since the introduction of the Caliber SRT4 at Chicago a couple of weeks ago. We will make every effort to keep up with the crowd but to help us out by remembering that we will not answer any questions regarding future product. Also we would ask that you limit your additional responses to our answers to just a couple so we can try and get to as many as possible. Thanks to all and here we go.

I have a few questions about the recently released camber plates...
(1) Will the Mopar camber plates fit properly on a stock 2005 ACR, or are there fitment issues?
(2) Is grinding the clevis bolt hole, as specified in the SRT-4 ACR service manual update, a similar/better/worse alternative to using front camber plates?
And similarly, for the rear, would using four Mopar adjustable rear control arms be a similar/better/worse alternative to using rear camber plates?
(3) The service manual update also adds the installation of camber bolts. Why not use the regular bolts instead of the thinner camber bolts, especially now that the clevis bolt hole has been ground?
Thanks in advance!

The Neon SRT4 was dropped because the Neon was dropped. Remember, that body was launched in 1999 as a 2000 model.
The Caliber makes 300 hp because it makes 260 ft lbs at 6000 rpms. The Caliber has an ALL NEW 2.4L World Engine. There are no interchangable parts between the Neon SRT4 engine and the Caliber SRT4 engine.

The Caliber SRT4 engine is an all new alunimum block, DOHC cylinder head with variable valve train. It has an improved induction system and intercooler for better inlet breathing and a more open exhaust, alla reduced back pressure. Yes it has larger injectors and it has a better breathing turbo.
What U.S. vehicles are your main competition for the Caliber SRT4?
Also will we see a six-speed tranny?

Hi, i have the following questions:
1)according to sport compact car, the srt-4 has a relatively short connecting rod for such a long stroke. what are the advantages of a shorter conrod?
2)roughly how many hrs did it take to build each srt-4? what about for a regular neon?
3)to be an srt engineer, do you need a masters degree?
Hi TeamSRT, thanks for the session!
Will the new Caliber SRT-4 include traction ctrl to help with wheel spining?
Any other similar measures?
If the trans will have an LSD, will it be Quaife's or a disc-type unit?
Last one: the Caliber's body seems to be taller than the Neon's; do you have info on the center of gravity, measures the car will implement to ctrl body-roll, etc?
As a suggestion, wouldn't be great if you would go ahead and point out whatever you think we car freaks would love to know when the questions start being boring / same?

Thanks in advance!
Yes, Mopar camber plates (P4510828 front, P4510827 rear) will fit the SRT4.
Grinding the clevis hole is a service alternative to meet stock autocrossing rules and still get a desirable racing alignment.
Camber plates are a better alternative, for a couple of reasons. One, you don't reduce tire clearance to the strut tube with camber plates. Two, you move the steering axis outboard when you increase negative camber with a camber plate, which helps keep the scrub radius manageable with wider than stock wheels and tires that are farther outboard. Three, it is much easier to make precise camber adjustments quickly with camber plates.
The camber bolts are no thinner than the stock bolts. They just don't have the knurling on them.
The adjustable rear lateral links allow more toe adjustment than the stock ones. You can use either to set camber. If it were my racecar, I'd use both on the rear for adjustability.

Is the new Mitsubishi developed and manufactured 2.4 liter, 300 hp motor in the Caliber SRT-4 the same 300 hp motor that will be the engine in the new Mitsubishi EVO X?
No, Mitsubishi's engine is a 2.0L and is significantly different. The new engine is not Mitsubishi developed, it has been developed out of the new Global Engine Alliance plant in Dundee, Mi.

**EDIT** Just saw an email from the moderator that this will be a Caliber related Q&A. If you have the time to field this one, fine. Otherwise I understand if you don't. Thanks..... **EDIT**
Thanks very much for taking the time out to come on here and field questions from DCX's customers. I've had my 300C SRT-8 since January and it's hands down the best performing, handling, and optioned vehicle I've ever owned. Kudos to the SRT team for another phenomenal product.
I don't believe this is an SRT model specific Q&A so I wanted to ask a question about the brake squeal/ grooved rotor / dust issue on the 300C SRT-8. And a follow up as to whether or not a 'fix' for the 1-2 shift hesitation has been discussed.
At the last meet and greet, an engineer indicated that the brake fix is well in the works and that 'we were going to like it'. I very much enjoy the performance of the Brembo system and I can honestly say that I've never had an issue with sqealing. I do have minor rotor grooving which I think is acceptable. What I really have an issue with is the inordanant amount of brake dust. This is a real inconvenience when you spend hours detailing the vehicle and painstakingly cleaning the wheels inside and out. They look great afterwards but no more than 10 miles of driving (normal, not even spirited) will yield a noticeable coat of brake dust. Being one of the mindset that you don't just 'wipe off' brake dust with some type of cleaner, I typically wait until I wash the entire car to do the rims again. This means that the car's exterior finish can look clean for 1 - 2 weeks, but the rims are black with brake dust after a couple of days. Do the engineers know if the fix in the works addresses this as well as the sqealing / grooving?
With regard to the 1 - 2 shift hesitation, some have had a flash done depending on when their car was built. There is a TSB out for it (sorry, I don't know the # off the top of my head). Some say it worked, most say it didn't. My car does not qualify based on build date because the version of the software in it supposedly has the hesitation addressed. Simply not true. The car consistently hits the rev limiter before shifting and sputters beforehand as well. This is with ESP on, ESP off (2nd position) and ESP totally disabled (3rd position). Some have seem to have gotten around it by using the Autostick but this is only accomplished by shifting at least 500 RPMs before redline so the computer catches up with your shift and actually shifts the tranny before hitting the limiter. There is an aftermarket system which addresses this, but I'm waiting to hear back from DCX as I don't want to risk voiding my warranty over something that in my opinion should be addressed by the manufacturer.
Hope I'm not coming off as a whiner. I know there are many others besides me who would like to know these answers and just like myself love this car nonetheless!! Any replies are appreciated in advance.
Thanks,
Dan M.

1. Would the Caliber SRT wheels fit the Neon SRT4?
2. I have had my Throttle Position Sensor and Wiring Harness replaced three times in the last 3 months. At random the throttle will stick at 3-4000 RPM's and not fall back down.

The lawyers will insist that I direct you to the Warranty information in the catalog or that's posted on www.mopar.com (http://www.mopar.com). But we don't leave you out in the cold. If you have an issue contact the Tech Line at 1-888-528-HEMI
As for the oil seals, no the seals aren't the issue. We'd suggest visiting your dealer for a leakdown test
On the waterleak, you've got drain tubes running down the pillars that sometimes get clogged. You'll see the holes in the trough. Get some fine wire and make sure they're clear.

You guys are doing a great job answering questions. Here is another. My 2003 Neon R/T came fully loaded with everything the Neon had to offer that year besides turbo. I have only front electrical windows. They only offered front. The back are crank. Will the Caliber have more electronics in interrior design?
The biggest gripe from the auto critics about the Neon SRT4 was that it is a straight-line rocket, but isn't a hero in the twisties. What kind of suspension parts does the Caliber SRT4 have to brag about?

What is going to be the base price for the Caliber SRT-4? Is it in the same price range as a Neon SRT-4?
Can't talk pricing yet as the car isn't out until Spring '07, but we are still planning on nailing the bang for buck equation.

Howabout a stock ACR?
The strut tower geometry is the same on all 2nd gen Neons.
Remember, though, that the '01-'02 ACR uses inverted struts, so the jounce bumper loads go up through the strut shaft. On a non-inverted strut, the jounce bumper loads are reacted on the strut mount outer metal.

the mopar cat back for the srt-4 what kind of gains do you get on for say mine with stage 1. would it be better to go with the cat back from mopar or some other company with 3". just woundering thanks
10-15 would not be unexpected gain for catback. And yes, I think you'd want to stick with the Mopar system. We've found in testing that larger isn't always better. Also, you might want to think about Cold Air Intake. It's the best bang for the buck upgrade.

Thanks,
Dan M.

I can attest to the boost control system the SRT team has put in place, even on the SRT-4 -- my car made the same power at 1200 ft. elevation as it does at 4800 ft. elevation. Same MPH through the traps, etc. Very impressive.

I don't work for a competitor, but I can understand your concern. The reason I asked is that I test drove the current Caliber last week and torque steer was noticeable even with the anemic 2.0 and CVT. My concern is that the addition of some actual power is going to make for a wild ride.

Thanks! I have 2 followups-- I have heard of the camber bolts slipping. Since we already have the camber from the larger clevis hole, do you need the camber bolts?
And just to be clear, you're saying you'd have both rear camber plates and the adjustable links, right?
If the camber bolts are slipping, they may not be torqued enough. You can also overtorque them and stretch the bolt, making a bad joint. The most you can torque the fastener is about 150 ft-lbs. You can also make quarter moon shaped shimms that fill in the slot to keep the joint from moving much if it slips.
The knurling gets in the way of the slot, and if you grind it off, you are grinding away some of the case hardening of the bolt.
Mopar does not sell adjustable rear lateral links. We do sell rear camber plates.

Not all of us have masters degrees. Being a crazy gearhead is a much bigger help.
We've noticed that a short rod usually results in owning a big boat!
I would point out that a long stroke/short rod combination tends not to let the piston stay straight in the cylinder bore (causes the piston to rock), especially under high load and/or RPM, which creates more friction between the piston and cylinder wall, and most importantly, decreases the ability for the rings to seal in the cylinder, resulting in a lack of power.
Keep up the good work Team SRT!

On the SRT-4 ACR package we lowered the ride height by both lowering the spring perches and using smaller diameter tires. Hello Team SRT,
As the owner of Dark Syde Performance in fairbanks AK, I have run into some issues with the cold and performance in the cold (we are talking -30 to -50) I am planning on picking up a caliber SRT when they hit the lots (already have my dealer/sponsor ready when they are released). my question will pertain to the oil cooler setup currently used on the SRT-4. I have done some of my own R&D on this setup and I have found that the placement of the factory cooler (which I needed to reroute) is prone to losing the deflecter and able to sustain a heavy amount of road debris which in the end has damaged the cooler core (I have seen this on 4 local SRT's as well). I was wondering if your platform will keep the oil cooler in the same location or if it will be infact routed towards the front of the vehicle possibly behind the FMIC and in front of the radiator. Also another issue I have witnessed first hand on the srt-4 that concerns me is the placement of the radiator overflow bottle. With alot of customers going big turbo or putting aftermarket parts on that increase EG Temps, has there been any other thoughts of possibly moving that bottle from the factory? Lastly will the caliber be built with a fuel rail that has a schrader valve?

The "yellow pull like tab" is the Ignition Off Draw fuse in the Neon SRT4, and is used by the plant to reduce the battery draw while shipping. There should be no reason to mess with this fuse after the vehicle has shipped from the plant.

That black rubber piece is an air dam, and provides significant assistance to Engine cooling and a healthy drag reduction. We wanted the cooling improvement / drag reduction, but were concerned about incidental contact with parking blocks and driveway approaches. This is why we made the part flexible

The Caliber makes 300 hp because it makes 260 ft lbs at 6000 rpms. The Caliber has an ALL NEW 2.4L World Engine. There are no interchangable parts between the Neon SRT4 engine and the Caliber SRT4 engine.
How much of this new engine draws off Mitsubishi's legendary 4G63? Any simularities or interchangablity of parts?
Or should I ask, who's engine was it modeled after? The A853 or the 4G63? I understand it's new, but one of the two was the starting point for the new design.

1st possibility:
You are sitting with my boss in a room. I will serve both of you a new bottle of fine scottisch single malt wiskey. If you finish the bottle first, you get the job.
Problem: My boss played all his life in a Rock'n Roll Band. So he is a tough guy.
Forget about possibility Nr. 1:D
2nd possibility:
You have to wrestle against my boss. If you get him on the ground, you get the job.
Problem: My boss has got he power of an uncontrolled driving tank and he is as lightfooted as a gazelle. So forget about Nr. 2:D
3rd possibility:
You have to beat his best lap of "Road America". I you make the impossible happen, you get the job.
Problem, Jeff Gordon prays every night in front of a big picture of my boss.
So forget about possibility Nr. 3:D
....the best way would be you try it the old fashioned way........

Do you mean hoping for traction or hopping? Drawing your own conclusions isn't always accurate. AWD and FWD have their own strengths and weaknesses. The holes all help us get hot air out from under the hood. The scoop gets cool air to push the hot air off of the dash panel, the louvers get hot air out during slow speed driving. We have designed the hood inner panel to allow the holes to function while keeping water / snow / debris from causing problems

Good Evening, Engineers:
I hate to ask this question on the Caliber Forum, but I really want an SRT Engineer to address this before another SRT product gets released with what I consider a major flaw. I have an SRT-8 Magnum and there is a severe delay (at least 500 RPM) in the 1-2 shift when the AutoStick is used in manual mode. I know this is software related and I have all the latest versions, yet there is still a painful delay. Is anyone working to correct this? I am tired of bumping the rev limiter everytime I drive the car for maximum performance.
Thanks,

Why don't you guys pitch the VM turbo diesel as a powerplant and really put the competition to shame?
I can see it now.........

What topics do you plan to cover in the live tech talks at the SRT Nationals this year?
It depends on the expertise of who is sent. Forte can answer any car cleaning/parking questions.

The people we are trying to attract with this car want to be able to haul all sorts of things, not just a__
Dodge is hoping to grab all those people that are dumping thier gas guzzling tanks (Tahoes and such) by giving them a tonka sized version of those tanks.:p
Then the SRT guys figured that if the base ones wont sell then dump 300 ponies under the hood and the Tuners will scoop them up like no tomorrow.:D

Well last question for you guys: IS THE CALIBER, ALL MODELS, GOING TO BE TUNERS, EASILY MODDED, AS NEONS WERE? I am a perspective buyer. I like the Dodge small engine line. Good on gas, when you don't abuse, and great power on the track when you do abuse. You guys pitched a great car today. Thanks. I still think that the Caliber is too boxy. Looks like a small ram from the front and a magnum from the back. Should have designed the look a little more sleek and aerodynamic. Like a sports car. Especially the SRT-4 Caliber.

Hi SRT TEAM
I just have a couple of questions. The first question is if one of you guys could do a brief email interview with me? I Need it for a school project, and I need to interview a engineer that works with automotives.
I might be able to help; please send your questions to me (please keep them brief), and I'll route them to an engineer and send them back to you. Send to dwb11@dcx.com.

I heard that there is a really killer Kicker system designed for the new SRT 4 is this true?
At a bare minimum, the "killer" Kicker system will be offered by Mopar.

So when are you guys going to release some of the "performance oriented" GPEC1's into the mainstream? Also, how about some tuning capabilities for the aftermarket. DC made that mistake with the JTEC and NGC's...let's not do it with the GPEC's...please. What about the longevity of the CVT trans under higher performance configurations? How does the band hold up?
Last question: different rim/tire combinations...'someone' took the Rev/Mile option out of the StarScan on the LX platform - what's the deal with that?!? You can't set the pinion factor for 20's on a 3.5L 300. Is that now the same thing for the PM platform?
Yes...I am a DC tech and have already been playing around with the Calibers and some custom aftermarket pieces.

Thanks,
Randy
Keep in mind that in manual mode there is no auto upshift so you might be waiting too long and bumping the rev limiter. Max torque is rated at 4400 rpm so you might try pulling the handle a bit quicker.

(Hi Joe)
Is it true the Kicker system knocks the rearview mirror off the windshield, so the delay in production is due to the search for a better adhesive?

Rating rules have recently changed, and we're playing by those rules. The vehicle weighs around 3200 Lbs
