ib2loud 04-09-2006, 01:50 PM Since we couldn't find a decent cargo mat for under $80, I decided to make one, so $15 later this is what I have

I thought it came out pretty good

superbang 04-09-2006, 01:55 PM hey that's pretty good, did you just use like a carpet sample and some plywood or something?
ib2loud 04-09-2006, 02:01 PM i made it from masonite so it could bend to get into place, the carpet was in a roll at auto zone for $9.99
DodgeGirlKathy 04-09-2006, 02:18 PM Very nice!
I thought of putting carpet back there too, which would put my own leftover interior carpet to good use that is currently taking up space in my basement! Although, it would probably end up looking like *#&@^* because I'm a complete hack when it comes to making things from scratch like that.
ib2loud, would you be willing to make a paper template of the masonite to share?? (expenses repaid to you, of course.)
ib2loud 04-09-2006, 02:25 PM Very nice!

wouldn't bother me a bit, not sure where to get a big enough piece of paper though
i just used cardboard and cut and test fit, and cut some more until it fit decent, then traced it onto the masonite. You can get masonite in a 4x8' sheet for around $6 and it's very flexible wood, just really nasty to cut since it gets dark brown sawdust/powder everywhere
just let me know what material and i'll see what i can do
caliber4whoosh 04-09-2006, 03:40 PM Looks professional! A template would be cool. ;)
Hey cool stuff ib2loud! I need to do that too. I'll be hauling stuff in the back and was thinking about how that plastic cover is going to get all banged and scratched up. I should also get me a piece to go over the back seats when they're closed.
suzq044 04-09-2006, 06:34 PM looks better than the plastic.. :D
caliber4whoosh 04-09-2006, 06:49 PM Yeah, looks a lot better than plastic..matches with the seatbacks too! :D
(almost)
holeydonut 04-09-2006, 06:54 PM Now you just got to mount some amps on there and bang out some 12"s ;)
caliber4whoosh 04-09-2006, 07:38 PM Haha....I think that the BA woofer is plenty loud..:D:D
NIVO88T 04-09-2006, 08:39 PM I like it, simple and effective
suzq044 04-10-2006, 10:43 PM i think wut would look better than our factory sound.. is better 'grilles' for the speakers.. so it looks less cheap.
Xtreme Thunder 04-11-2006, 07:35 PM ib2loud:
Somehow I over looked this thread and just noticed it now!:) I love what you did with the cargo area. I was thinking that will be one of the mods I do to mine when i get one (my luck the next year:mad:). Did you carpet both sides so you don't scratch up the vinyl? Seems like you did to me and seems like you glued the carpet to the masonite?
Excellent Job!!!!:):):):D
caliber4whoosh 04-11-2006, 07:44 PM Noooo Joe, he shat on the masonite and the carpet magically stuck...
:D

:D
LMFAO, You little ****!!:D
Staples??;)
caliber4whoosh 04-12-2006, 01:32 PM Yeah, I'm either guessing staples, glue, or magical feces...:D
ib2loud 04-12-2006, 01:40 PM i just used 3m spray adhesive and covered it like you would a speaker box. it doesn't budge once it's in place so i'm not worried about scratching underneath. the only hard part was bending it so that it would go into the cargo area without hitting the C-pillar, but the wood is very flexible so it wasn't a problem, just had to stick the long jut on the drivers side in first and lean the rear seats forward
caliber4whoosh 04-12-2006, 01:44 PM Oh, I see, so it was magical ****!!! :D

Thanks for the clarification ib2loud!! I will have to do something like the in the future!!
Oh, I see, so it was magical ****!!! :D
LOL Sinan, are you obsessed with "****" all of a sudden or is it just me?? LOLOL:D:D
:p
caliber4whoosh 04-12-2006, 08:43 PM Yeah, I just got done reading 150 pages of grapes of wrath by Steinbeck in like 2 hours so yeah...
other than that, I'm just messin around.. :D:eek:
(you could say I'm doing it for ****s and giggles I guess too...)

For class?? If so, sparknotes.com LOL!!!:D:D I never read anything, I was bad in HS.:cool:
holeydonut 04-14-2006, 05:37 PM IMO, I think kids need to be reading more than just internet forums, or their ability to communicate well (with English) as adults is going to be really crappy.
Talking isn't required to play blackjack or to work at McDonalds - but you gotta learn English some time ;)

LOL What are you trying to say???:D:D;) I know what you mean...
I did better in college English classes (101, 102, 201 etc.) than I did in High School, I don't have a reasoning for it though. For some reason the History class I am taking this semester, I am getting grades I have never dreamed of in earlier semesters. I narrowed it down to the professor though, as the way he teaches and interacts with the class of such I have never seen before; I seem to like that class!!
Anyway, I think this would be a great thread to keep around, so others can do the same mod as well...
OrangeRT 04-14-2006, 07:56 PM Love the mod. I will do the same to our Caliber this weekend I assume. I fall into the 40ish(!) category. Many of the forum people seem to be a LOT younger than I am.
I am hoping the "new" gen relies on more than the internet for communication.
onebadwop 04-15-2006, 02:13 AM That carpet makes the back look so much cleaner. Cool mod.
suzq044 04-15-2006, 11:49 AM now u can make a hard taneu cover :D [or a soft one w/ the same shape..
new to dodges 04-16-2006, 04:16 PM Nice cargo mat. I will be starting one soon.
new to dodges 04-16-2006, 04:20 PM OrangeRT I am in the early 50ish group. We do need more of us around.
ib2loud 04-16-2006, 06:33 PM i'm almost in the 30ish group so i'm not too far off
caliber4whoosh 04-16-2006, 06:48 PM Wow, seems like the Caliber is attracting all sorts of people and ages! :D
InfernoRedSXT 04-16-2006, 08:48 PM I like that alot! great idea! :)
I just did the headliner in my neon in black a month or so ago, and it turned out very nice. I still have the 3m glue leftover. Seems like a cheap, nice mod to do. good job!
MAGNUM8R 04-17-2006, 09:28 AM I want to do this mod soon! We just got our Caliber SE. The tint is going on this morning, Wifey doesn't know yet.
A pattern would be great, I would consider custting in the middle so it hinges for removal and storage.
Need some butcher paper from the meat counter?? Where do you live??
Since we couldn't find a decent cargo mat for under $80, I decided to make one, so $15 later this is what I have
I thought it came out pretty good
Thanks for the great idea!! I just finished mine. I would post pics, but it's identical to yours.
48"x48" masonite: $4.00 Home Depot
Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive: $10.99 Home Depot
Graphite Auto/RV carpet: $12.99 Pep Boys
1.5 hour labor: $0.00
About $30 bucks total.
suzq044 05-27-2006, 10:48 PM now you can use it in place of the taneu cover if u wanted :D
lukeinva 05-29-2006, 06:30 PM Well I tried to do this for my wife today. I was cutting the wood and couldnt get it to get in right so, My buddy dex said why dont you just glue the carpet onto the middle piece that would look good. I was thinking and said yeah that would look good! So I go ahead and do it and it turned out pretty damn good I thought! I go in get my wife to show her (we already spent like 2hrs on the thing) my work that I thought looked good well she said since it wasnt perfect she didnt like it! So I ripped it out and was pretty freakin pissed!!! Then I took the goo gone to take the goo off the hatch thing and put it back to normal!! Yes what a great freakin holiday I had!! Cant wait til the next one!
It does take some patience to get the shape right. I made a cardboard template for each side then measured across. It took me 5 or 6 times each side to get it right. I say give it another try.
