Hi Shawn! I've been an owner of a 07 Caliber SXT since 2007. I bought it brand new out of the dealership. This car fits my needs and, so far, very reliable. I've added the second generation of Mopar utility bars (roof racks) and that's it! I've seen a good average in terms of gas mileage. My engine is the 2.0 and it gives 26 city / 30 highway mpg. Some other owners outside of this forum claim up to 36 mpg on the same engine.
Most of the work that I'm able to do at home,by reading or using resources like books or YouTube, I do it! I shop around on eBay, Amazon, dealers, etc., for original parts(Mopar) or replacement parts and compare them!!! Unfortunately, no matter what , some parts have to be original and there's some things that it has to be done by a Chrysler mechanic or dealership... I try to stay on top of the game with maintenance and I've been able to skip some of the hard times people experience with the Dodge Caliber in general.
I like the car. It's comfortable and has only failed to start once in the 8 years I've owned it. Not the best gas mileage for me. I average around 26-28. I will say ive had to shell out another $2,000 in repairs over the years since ive paid it off. At 130k and have had to replace the AC condenser, had an expensive manifold repair, and had a leak in transmission cooler.
Yes, there's certain things that did get damage along the way. But so are any other brand of car... I did had to do some non-maintenance repairs like the replacement of the intake manifold and the AC evaporator, which I had to "roll the dough" at the dealership to have it done somewhat right and at least get some warranty. I own another car, Japanese, that I had to spend money in other repairs (not necessarily similar to the parts damaged in the Caliber) that were as costly... You'll see in my profile several posts I made that talks about certain things that had happened while I have owned the Caliber.
