How To: P2004 / P2017 troubleshooting video

This is on my Jeep Patriot but it's all the same guts under the hood.

Prior to this I had gone through all the electrical testing of the wires using the factory service manual. All electrical wiring was ok.

What the code means is the intake manifold runner control is not working correctly. That means that it can't open and close the flaps in the intake manifold which give you better low and high end power by adjusting air velocity.

To remove the IMRC motor, take off the round intake hose from the air box, as well as the smaller hose that goes to the valve cover, and also the plastic part of the air box that goes across the battery.

You can then pull up on the air box and it will just pop out of the rubber sockets it sits in.

The motor sits on the side there, you need a 10mm socket for the screw closest to you, 8mm for the one farthest and 10mm for the one on the bottom.

After that, you can test the motion of everything.

So I've done all of this troubleshooting stuff before and have the exact same results as you show in the videos. What did you end up doing to fix it, or did you fix it? I just got my emissions notice in the mail, so I have about 2 months to get this fixed and I really don't want to/can't afford to buy a new manifold.

Rockin' the bone stock Surf Blue 2009 Caliber SXT
Not so new anymore with 115k miles and lots of little problems popping up. Yay!
