Caliber Fairy Ad Homophobic???

5115 Views 44 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  dommo_g
I was searching the web for more photos of the Caliber ad campaign, as I have not seen "the Principal" or "Bumper Cars" print ads or the Focus Group video ad. I came across a website (malcontent.typepad.com) with a discussion of whether the "Too Tough" caliber ad with the fairy is homophobic. Links to other sites with similar discussions, including whether the ad campaign as a whole is misogynistic.
Either I'm missing something or I'm one of the testosterone-charged homophobes they're complaining about. Guess I should be more careful when surfing the web.

I heard the same type of stuff being bantered around about the "fast" ads as being misogynistic because the guys were always laying the verbal smack-down on their ladies.

But... as for a car ad being homophobic... that's a bit of a stretch. I mean, having a miniturized construction worker flying around and zapping the Caliber wouldn't have much much sense - eh?
What the hell are they talking about... stupid ******* (haha joke :D)

:p
Being gay myself...I do not find the "fairy" ads at all offensive. I think it's quite funny really. It is the only TV ad I have seen so far here in Cleveland, but yea...I think it's funny
I don't necessarily think that DCx were trying to be homophobic{although i do think that fairy turn that dude into a flame}I think that they are trying to get this car as far away from being a ,cute little car that girls love and metrosexuals love to drive, as possible. Now i don't know how many true moparfans are in here but Dodge has always had the reputation for being "the real mans car"{1968-9 Charger campain}and they have always appealed to the macho man in us{why do you think DC is the only american(and one of few in the world) car company w/o a hybrid in the line? In Fact while everyone droped hybrids getting 60-70MPG. Mopar came out w/the SRT Ramthats gets 9MPG!{The worst gas milage in production}. And thats how they would like to keep it. So no offense to any homosexuals in here but you got yourself in this.
I may be gay, but I'm no pansy...I loved my Dodge Ram, and will get another. I also plan on getting a Charger STR8. I'm very masculine, and no one would think I was gay upon meeting me :)
Well, I too am gay - and I don't find these ads homophobic at all! I like the Caliber because it does look like a "man's" car. I love the "any thing but cute' campaign. With all due respect to Neon drivers the world over, that car looked girly to me. You won't catch me driving a 'fruity' car. Oh wait, I currently drive a Ford Focus ZX5 - d'oh!
Back fiend!!! Why doth thou driveth a piece of shittah Furd???! :D:D:D
Well...I have a Neon with the SRT design package, so it's almost as masculine as a Neon can look. I do have it out of necessity for high mileage...I get 42 MPG on the highway with it, the '03 Ram I had got 21 if I was lucky

Lol, I was just messin with ya dude. Lucky bastard, 21 mpg with a Ram? I am willing to bet money that it no-no have HEMI. We're lucky to get 11 :D:D:D
no...the Hemi wasn't available when I got mine...it had the 4.7L overhead cammer..great engine, they should put it in the 300, Charger and Magnum

there's no way you're getting 42 on the highway. I have an SXT as well as my SRT-4, and the SXT barely nudges 30 on a good day.
I have a 5 speed...and on my trips to South Carolina from Cleveland, I get 42...around here, because I drive more aggressively, I get 34 on the highway
First of all, nobody could seriously call that ad homophobic, that fairy is hot....

second, you don't get 42 mpg with any Neon unless it's a downhill trip. I've owned one of every year (except 2003) in SOHC and DOHC configuration, and I get 29-32 mpg with my S3R SRT-4.

Fix the odometer problem and you'll be all set.
Now that sucks, when a gay man calls your neon girly:p

But Dale, I checked a map AND a globe - and from Cleveland to here in South Carolina IS all downhill. ;)

Grab a map or globe, and follow along with me...

...Cleveland is UP there...and look, South Carolina is DOWN here. :p

Gee, I've been living here too long. I'm starting to think like these natives...
And for me, South Carolina is OVER there. :D

Therefore, you should receive a more typical gas mileage.

However, your outer tire wear may be excessive on only one side of the vehicle, and your drink may not be level in that (lighted) cupholder - depending on which lateral direction you are heading, of course.
