Dodge Caliber gets top marks for safety

BELVIDERE — The Belvidere-built Dodge Caliber was given five stars — the top rating — for both the driver and passenger safety in frontal crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The distinction is not rare, but it puts the Caliber in the top half of passenger cars for safety. The Caliber is the first passenger car NHTSA has tested for model year 2007, but the agency has tested 107 passenger cars from the 2006 model year and 53 received five stars for safety for both the driver and passenger.

The Caliber is assembled at the DaimlerChrysler plant in Belvidere. The company employs about 2,650 there and is hiring another 1,000 for a third shift. The Dodge Neon, the car the Caliber replaced in Belvidere, received four stars for both passenger and driver safety in 2005, the last model for the Neon.
