timing and knock

12592 Views 73 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Tal Whacker
i have my boost turned down to 16psi, because of the colder weather my a/f is much leaner.
heres what i want to know, my timing is still setup for my 21psi. can not having enough timing on 16psi cause knock?

my knock (1.1 at wot) seems kinda high for my boost level and an a/f of 11.2-11.6

any thoughts.

your lucky to even have gas that is ethanol free. i could drive 100 miles and still not find gas that is ethanol free.

thats why i dont think the gas is the problem.
i gonna go out and start it here in a little to see what it does. it does its most crazy **** after it sits over night.
If it hits different load cells, then you are not getting the same boost. With a small turbo and an internal WGA, you will not get the exact same boost every time. The FIC is much more sensitive to boost changes than a mechanical or digital boost gauge.

The knock is changing because your boost is changing, therefore changing your timing map.

Get a lock on where the knock is the worst, and just pull some timing.

You are WAY over thinking this and really making a big deal out of nothing.

The car is not possessed, and there is nothing horribly wrong. You just need to figure out how it works a bit better and it will be a sinch for you to make a change here and there. Me personally, I wouldnt worry about making a change unless its unsafe. Your not racing the car so a tad rich A/F or a slight timing pull is not the end of the world.

Relax, learn, take your time, and keep it safe. You have a modified car, its not going to be 100% perfect 100% of the time.

Hope that helps

im not really sure how to read the timing table. should i pull 1 degree or 1/2 degree at a time?

i managed to get my fuel trims to stay between -10 and +10 while normal driving, idle and taking off from a stop is my only problem. no matter which way i take the fuel it still bucks like a mother. i make an adjustment and its fine for a min. then does it again.

im just trying to wrap my mind around why the car runs completely different every time i start it. just now for example, went out and started it and everything looked good from yesterdays tinkering.

stopped to get something to eat, came out started the car and the a/f was nuts and my short trim was at 22-28. i just let it sit their and sputter, after a few min. it started to fix itself.

i also noticed something else, when i turn my car off it makes a bunch of clunking noise. after i make an adjustment that noise disappears for awhile then comes back. i can recreate this every time after a small adjustment on the fuel/load map.

im not over thinking this, i just want my car to run a little better. its embarrassing when your at red light and you go to take off (normal driving)and it starts bucking spitting and sputtering like your riding a bull.

That happens to me occasionally too
As for the clunking noise..I know exactly what you're talking about..after I make an adjustment, it goes away (it only does it when I turn the car off) and then after a while it comes back..its weird and I could never figure it out..

PM sent about the noise??
Same problem here man, my car sometimes when i start it in the morning it gets some weird stumbling, or it turns off by it self trying to take off a light and believe me i being driving stickshift cars since 12 it has nothing to do with me; or some other times i've seen up to 6 points of knock with same gas, weather, gear, boost level, when i regularly only get 1.-1.5 which is normal (well at least am used to it) I really think our car doesn't like to be tricked by either a clamp or FIC. Latest problem am getting is with the WOT box which was working perfect then suddenly stoped working for who knows what reason, then i had it replaced and soldered everything back in and it only works on 1st to 2nd gear, rest of the gears is like not having anything. Some mornings when i get to deal with all of this together it makes me feel like throwing the car in the canal and get me another vehicle and leave it mod free

How long does that GAP insurance last? Is it different from state to state?

Not meaning to hijack the thread or anything lol

But yeah this car drives me nuts at times too

As for you Mike, I made some pulls and everything is a okay. Knock is around 1.1 or so and falls and afrs are fine.

:jester:, this tuning problem has now turned into a discussion about insurance fraud. It takes a truly unique car to do that.

gap insurance lasts the life of the loan. it covers the difference from what your car is worth to what you owe in the even it gets totaled. too bad it doesnt cover the difference from what the car is worth to what a dealer would give you on trade in lol.

 i do love my car, its the payment i dont like very much lol. when times get tight i sure could use the 427/mo payment and 125/mo insurance to not be there. but hopefully that will all change soon and i can go back to enjoying my car and modding it.
