In my store the other day, I found two Dynomax Ultraflo mufflers, one in the right box but someone had ripped it all apart to look at it and it was no longer presentable to be sold and the other muffler had the right part number but was boxed wrong (In a Super Turbo box) from Dynomax. So I defected them out to be sent back, but instead it came up in the system for me to destroy them instead of send them back.

So now I have two $80 mufflers for free and I still have my two 3" outlet (I think they are 3" or smaller) Summit Racing rolled edge slash cut tips left over from my last car. Here in the next few weeks I hope to get them installed or at least one muffler installed. So we will see how it sounds.

This sounds like an interesting project. I've heard that the weight alone of the stock muffler is a lot and restrictive by my exhaust dealer locally. He said he replaced one already with a borla muffler and said that the owner was happy. This dealer is a cool guy and very honest and would even tell people if they already got a good exhaust. He makes good points of back pressures, weight, etc. For my Neon he replaced the muffler which was installed by another speed shop and told me it was mismatched for the car and the muffler he installed was quieter but the car ran great. As for my Caliber he just turned the exhaust nozzle upwards like the R/Ts and put on a stainless tip. See if you can take notice of the weight difference between both mufflers and let us know.

3" is way over bored for our engines...including the R/T

dont think he meant piping 3"... i think just the tip. Im sure a 3" tip is fine, but yes, 3" pipes would be retarded.

With the cat on the car are you sure it would be to much? With the CCV (hope thats the correct name for it) trans having a free flowing exhaust system could only benifit the car. Yes 3" might be over board but there is 2 30 degree bends and then 2 90 degree bends just to get the exhaust out the back of the car. I feel that a 3" system might net the best gains on a dyno over the replacment 2.5" systems. If I just had a car with out that stupid trans in it that I could work with I would be able to tell the difference between the 2.5 and 3.0 system.

in my experience with exhaust systems, you wont find a 4cyl with a 3" exhaust unless its boosted. I believe its due to the fact that you do need to keep some degree of back pressure... and with a 3" you wouldnt be able to do that...

Yes you do need to keep some back pressure on an NA car, but with the CVT trans is it really nessasary since the car is always in "rev" mode trying to make the most power it can all the time? I will be doing some testing first of next month with the CVT and 3" exhaust systems to see if it in fact hurts or helps the car.

Finally got the metal diaper changed on the Caliber. The Dynomax Ultraflo is on the car.

The sound? What sound? I think, in my case, since removing the air silencer/battery cover, gutting the air box, and removing the engine cover. Alot of what I hear in the car, is from the motor itself. Outside the vehicle, there is a noticable difference, mainly at idle and from 1,000 to 1,750 RPM there is a faint bass tone that can be heard in the car while driving. So faint I don't think my camera would pick it up considering the other noises.

I took pictures and a video of it at idle from behind, whenever I can get it off the camera I will post it.

Not bad for only $60 actually spent and all of that was in labor, the muffler was free and the tip was left over from my last vehicle.

Can't go wrong with a free muffler and tip, you got away with a real bargain. Did you notice that it got rid of that buzzy exhaust note from the factory muffler? I now have a lower tone from my muffler as well and it sounds nice. Post pics, like to see the install.
