Ok, I know all about the exhaust pinging sounds that my dealer has yet to address (May 06 Caliber), but I have this one sound that is driving my nuts. After I turn off the car I hear a soft beep and then tick, tick, tick sound that appear to be coming from the front passenger side. I noticed this sound during the late winter/spring, we had a real cold snap in Feb/March. I had the oil changed during that time and the mechanic failed to read the 5W-20 in large letters on the oil cap and placed 10W-30 (I use synthic oil) instead unknown to me. So, I put about 3,000 miles with this oil. When I took the car to the dealer, they all think this is from the 10W-30 oil, but most folks I talk to don't think so. I had two oil changes with 5W-20 and the noise is still there. Overall, no other problems, I'm getting 30+ mpg (2.0, CVT) and running well. Has anyone else heard the beep and three-tick sound? Thanks.

I haven't heard the beep, but I have heard the 3 ticks though. Haven't located it nor understood it. You are not alone!

I have heard that too. I live in Arizona. I've had my cali do it when its real hot out though. But stops after a bit. Weird!

Ah...the computer...that could be the beep sound. I gather that this rapid tick, tick, tick sound is one of those odd Dodge noises. I grew up learing how to drive with the original (1976) Dodge Aspen station wagon, so I have some idea of odd Dodge noises and the sometimes strange things they do. I somewhat remember the computer (the dreaded "brain") had something strange with it and it would cause the car to cut out while driving. Actually, it was real workhorse of a car after all the bugs were shaken out. I just hope this Caliber computer brain is not related to the old Aspen brain.

Could it be the fuel pump? I don't hear this on mine, but I remember by brothers GMC truck would make similar noises when he shut it off and it was the fuel pump making the noise. It was normal for that vehicle.

try this ,chut the car of ,take the key out ,wait a minute and turmn the dom light on and you will hear 3 ticks inside the car . I tryt this in the morning but i have no idea why its doing that ,chers Thomas

Don't know about a beep but there is a ticking sound issue after engine shut off. Its the exhaust pipe and muffler cooling that causes the ticking noise. In early 2006 manufactured Calibers the ticking can be VERY loud.

ever since i put duall exhaust on mine i have eliminated that completely
Which dual exhaust did you install and did you notice just by weight the difference opposed to the stock muffler, I heard that the stock muffler alone has a lot of weight. How is the sound, louder or the same as stock, I would be interested if the objectives are not much louder than stock, less restrictive but with enough back pressure, weight savings and of course looks. Thanks, post pics if available.

hical, ok first i would like to know how your intake mod is doing, cause im thinking about it, if you dont mind, two you can see mi pics on *************, under kenny arledge. this was the first time i dualled out a 4 banger, so i took it down to have it done, i had them cut off the noise resonator because i didnt think it was going to be that loud, because it was a 4 banger, keep in mind that it was straight pipe all the way to my dualls, well this was way to loud so i went back and they put a new version glasspack in reverse where the resonator used to be, this i can except for the looks and performance. now i would suggest you leave the noise resonator on and run straight pipes at the back and if this is too loud for you than you can go back and have them add the newer glass pack on behind the resonator, that setup should give you what your looking for, looks as well, of coaurse you dont have to have them extended like i did but i like mine that way, hope this helps, and remember thats ****** with a z:)

I had a car which I placed glass packs in place of the resonator and loved it. Which muffler did you install and hows the low end response. I know that if it doesn't have enough back pressure the low ends gone, happened to my Neon RT, replaced with a proper muffler then it was great!
I am still driving around with the intake cutout removed, did play with it several times on/off and the big difference I can tell is when decelerating. When you remove your feet from the pedal it doesn't slow down as quickly/less sluggish. As for the acceleration I think it's better, could be wrong but I feel more pull.
Another mod which I did for about a couple months but failed to post yet is I opened up the factory grille at the two middle high slots just like the others that are opened already. If you notice that the air from the air box goes in through the hood latch area diverted by the hood and radiator frame gaskets. I tried doing a simple test with a leaf blower and found that by opening up these slots the air is channeled with more volume and cooler I hope. Even with a good rainstorm water only gets up to the latch area in mist so I found that I didn't have to worry about water issues.
Also I removed the engine cover. This engine compartment gets very hot. Usually a cooler engine means better efficiency, worked for my Neon.

did you see my pic ,i can do another one if you like, more under the car. ok the glass pac was kin of small and inside it had metal on the sides and hollow through it and it was put on in reverse and have had no negative response, keep in mind this is a 4 banger so your not going to get that flowmaster sound, but i have to have some sound, and on the low end about 2 seconds after letting off the gas you can feel and hear the car slowing like on say a v6., on heavy accelleration from low its a little noisy not alot noisy, but once up to speed it has a nice sound even at 80 im a nascar fan so you can imagine how picky i am when it comes to my car, i have 2inch stainless tips, the bigger the tips the more sound because basically they just amplify whats going on inside the system.and i can tell you im so glad i did this, because i like to hear what my engine is doing so i will know exactly how to push, when to shift out from low.and know if my engine has any quirks, the glasspack was just a 45 dollar one. thats all thats on the car cat convert, glasspack in reverse ,and straight pipe after that and it dont sound like a ricer. and personally i dont think my pickup could get any better, i was seriously gonna get rid of the car until i had the flash, and the way i drive it keeps getting better, but now i like the performance as i am a competiter, hopes this helps:)

thankx for the advice about the engine cover and yes it does keep engine cooler, makes sense, the cover was hot, it was insulating the engine, i went out and started it from a trip to the store and the temperature dropped 10 degrees with ac on

If you have pics on how it sits under the car that'll be good. On my Caliber it's a CVT so don't know how the engine will sound amplified, but with my Neon RT w/ 5 speed modified it roars when you stomp on the pedal so I know what you mean, I like that sound myself. I would think though a CVT would sound strange since you have that engine rev with the Rpms wandering around rather than a manual trans. I wouldn't mind putting on a lighter muffler and resonator just for kicks though and see what happens.

have you had the flash yet, if not you need to run to the dealer, after that the rpms dont roam near as much, so it sounded like sh.. before the flash now it sounds allmost like a regular tranny with a little variounce, and i allso have the 2.0 c vt. driving from low to drive , i shift out at 3500-4000 rpms, by this time im doing 35-40 mph, about 4 seconds. i like everything modified, whether its my stereo , car, ect so the sound has too be pretty good for me to like it.so here is the setup as i said the glasspack in reverse is where the resonator used to be, then its straight pipe until allmost to the rear suspension, then it has a y , regular tubbing, then one is run to the left and right, when your looking at it from behind the pipes come close together about 2 or 3 inches apart and looks like they go straight to the front, i will try to get the pics on the other ****** tommorrow after work, the way i done that, from what you said is what your looking for. when my cali was on the rack at the muffler shop, one guy that was having his mustang dualled out said it looked wicked

I've been hearing a similar tick tick tick since I've owned mine. I heard it once when I turned the key on before starting and I suspect a fuel pump problem but I never hear it while running so I'm not 100% sure that's it. If I find out I'll let you know.
